Tucson is the home of the University of Arizona, and its boundaries include the independent community of South Tucson.


Located 15 miles south of Tucson, Sahuarita is a largely residential city in the scenic Sonoran Desert. It is a short drive from the Tohono O’odham Nation San Xavier Indian Reservation, where you can visit the Mission San Xavier del Bac, a one-of-a-kind Spanish mission founded in 1692. The city is also home to the Titan Missile Museum, a former missile site that is now open to the public. Sahuarita Lake is a man-made lake that is a popular destination for boating and fishing.

Oro Valley

North of Tucson’s city limits, Oro Valley is known for its high-tech firms and high-end shopping. However, there are many outdoor activities that visitors and residents alike can enjoy. Oro Valley is home to several golf courses, as well as plenty of easily accessible biking, hiking, and equestrian trails. It’s also close to Catalina State Park, where you will find birds, streams, canyons, saguaros, and many other unforgettable desert sights.


An unincorporated place southeast of Tucson, Vail is an excellent place for outdoor sightseeing. It offers an unrivaled close-up view of the Rincon Mountains as well as a spectacular view of the other mountain ranges that ring Tucson. If you feel like exploring the depths of a vast underground cave system, you can pay a visit to nearby Colossal Cave Mountain Park, which also features a butterfly garden, horseback riding, and a ranch.

Rita Ranch

A planned community located near Vail, Rita Ranch is home to nearly 20,000 people today. Rita Ranch is located near Esmond Station Regional Park, which will be 274 acres when its development is completed. The park includes the remains of the former Esmond Train Station. It is also close to the site of the 1903 Esmond Train Wreck, a head-on collision of two trains that killed 14 people.


A bedroom community located northwest of Tucson, Marana has numerous shopping, dining, and hiking opportunities to offer the entire family. It is conveniently close to a number of notable outdoor attractions such as Old Tucson, Saguaro National Park, and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. There are also plenty of resorts, including the renowned five-star Ritz-Carlton at Dove Mountain.
